The CBT for the Test of Competence is the computer-based exam that nurses (and midwives) take when they want to join the NMC Register or return to working in the UK. The CBT forms one of the two crucial steps required to pass the Test of Competency, the other part – of course – being the OSCE. The CBT is split into two separate sections — Part A (Numeracy) and Part B (Clinical) — and aims to assess both core calculation skills as well as broad clinical knowledge. While the OSCE is certainly the harder of the of the two aspects of the ToC, both are equally as important.
In Part A of the CBT (Numeracy) the candidate is given 15 questions to complete in approximately 30 minutes. Typically these questions cover things like drug calculations, metric conversions, fluid balances, and other numerical tasks essential for safe patient care. Part B (Clinical) then comprises around 100 multiple-choice questions, to be completed in approximately 2 hours 30 minutes, covering a range of key professional standards and practices. The questions in part B are based on the NMC’s standards of proficiency and the NMC Code and covers several areas such as a nurse’s professional role, care delivery, safety, coordination and other aspects of professional conduct as set out in the NMC’s standards. Specific scenarios and questions are tailored to a candidates chosen field to ensure relevance in their intended area of practice. Candidates must pass both parts to proceed with registration.
My Nurse’s Life now offers a dedicated Online Training course, specifically designed for the CBT, separate from and in addition to our hugely successful OSCE training. Our comprehensive self-study course is designed to reflect the true structure and content of the CBT, with accurate numeracy practice and clinical question walkthroughs. Importantly, our training materials are 100% accurate, and while they mirror the style and format of the real exam questions, they are entirely original. This safeguards you from the risk of incorrect answers or out of date content that other providers may inadvertently include. My Nurse’s Life teaches you to understand and adopt the standards and practices of the NMC, rather than simply memorising questions by rote, which can easily lead to mistakes.
Moreover, when you are enrolling our CBT course, the cost you pay will be deducted from the fee for any of our OSCE training courses, should you go on to book with us! In this way you benefit now from focused CBT preparation and retain the option to upgrade to full OSCE training at a reduced cost. This integrated pathway is designed to support you through both parts of the ToC with confidence and continuity. Our online CBT course costs just £30 for one months full access or £75 for three months. Both are recoupable when signing up to any of our outstanding OSCE courses.
