NHS Wales Exceeds Recruitment Target for Indian Healthcare Workers
NHS Wales has surpassed its goal of recruiting healthcare professionals from India, bringing in over 300 workers from the state of Kerala last year. This exceeds the original target of 250 set as part of a non-binding agreement between the Welsh Government and Kerala. The new recruits include nurses, doctors, and other healthcare staff who are now contributing to the health service across Wales.
Jeremy Miles, cabinet secretary for health and social care, praised the initiative, highlighting Kerala’s strong reputation for training medical professionals. He said, “Alongside continued investment in training healthcare staff in Wales, international recruitment has always been one of the ways we can help address NHS workforce vacancies.” He added that the new recruits’ commitment to providing high-quality care is already making a difference, and many are settling into their new lives in Wales.
This recruitment drive is part of the broader Wales in India programme, launched earlier last year to strengthen ties between the two regions.
In addition to healthcare recruitment, the initiative has supported cultural exchanges, art projects, and humanitarian work, fostering a deeper connection between Wales and India.
